How dangerous is shirk in Islam. Polytheism or shirk is a false belief that is a worship for many people who are totally unaware of its consequences and the teachings of Islam about it.

• If there were in the heavens and the earth other gods beside Allah, there would be confusions in both (heaven and earth) but glory be to Allah, the Lord of ,the throne; high is He above what they attribute to Him. (Al Anbiya:22)

The universe is in an ecological balance and there eis no doutt if the above was false, then there would be no creation left in the universe. One God has one will and authority over the entire universe and everything in it.

The greatest sin for anyone is to commit Shirk, In Islam, it is the only sin that cannot be forgiven by Allah (s.w.t.) on the Day of Judgment. As said in the Qur’an:

• Verily, Allah forgives not that rivals should be set up in the worship with Him. He forgives save that (anything else) to whom He pleases and whoever set up rivals with Allah he has indeed done a tremendous sin. (Al Nisa:48)

Why does shirk occupy such a serious position in Islam?

There are several reasons for it, shirk is a practice that causes downfall of humanity and spoils its dignity.

Man is the best creation of Allah (s.w.t.), created in ‘the highest of forms’ (Al Tin:4). He is the khalifatul fir ardh [the vicegerent of Allah (s.w.t.)]. He falls ‘to the lowest of the low’ (Al Tin:5) when he takes any other creation of Allah (s.w.t.) as deities or gods.

• Turn unto Allah (only), not ascribing partners unto Him, for whoso ascribes partners unto Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky and the birds had snatched him or the wind had blown him to a far off place. (Al Hajj:31)

 The Root of All Evil

Shirk means that humans beings can believe in the powers of various different sources or creatures in the universe and worship them. These can include jinns, the angels, spirits and humab beings as well. Many ignorant practices are growing due to this belief.

Shirk is tyranny and injustice

No other creature has any control over their lives, they cannot solve thier own dilemmas, therefore it is not possible to worship anyone except Allah. An injustice is to withhold someone’s rights or treat someone in an unfair manner. Forgetting Allah is the biggest sin that leads to his fury.

When Luqman said to his son while advising him “Oh my son! Do not ascribe partners to Allah. Indeed shirk is a great injustice.” (Luqman:13)

Shirk Causes Fear and Anxiety in Society

The powers of various deities are believed to have been superior to Allah, then this creates an environment of fear and anxiety in the society.Dependence on other entties can only create chaos.

We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve because they ascribe partners unto Allah for which no warrant has been revealed. (Al Nisa:151)
