The rise of Muslim scientists and mathematicians a few centuries back was an indication that Islam lays emphasis on learning and exploring the universe. The concept of learning in Islam was given way back in the days of Prophet Muhammad, who himself advised Muslims to take keen part in learning (religion and other subjects). Quran revealed the first verse relation to learning in 611 AD which reads:
“Read: In the name of thy Lord who created man from a clot. Read: And thy Lord is the Most Generous Who taught by the pen, taught man that which he knew not.”
(Quran, 96:1-5)
“And they shall say had we but listened or used reason, we would not be among the inmates of the burning fire.”
(Quran, 67:10)
“Are those who have knowledge and those who have no knowledge alike? Only the men of understanding are mindful. “
(Quran, 39:9)
And the Qur’an exhorts the Muslims to do scientific research:.
“And whoso bringeth the truth and believeth therein such are the dutiful.”
(Quran, 39:33)
Every Muslim man’s and every Muslim woman’s prayer should be:
“My Lord! Enrich me with knowledge..”
(Quran, 20:114)
The reasoning and persuit of knowledge are made obligatory on every Muslim, man and woman. The Quran teaches humans how to learn in the following ways:
- Seek knowledge “even though it be in China.”
- The seeking of knowledge is compulsory for every man and woman in the world.
- The blood of the martyr is not as sacred and the link of a scholar.
- Islam tells us to seek knowledge from cradle to grave.
- Allah says that ‘whoever walks in the pursuit of knowledge I facilitate for him the way to heaven.’
- To pursuit knowledge is a form of a worship in Islam.
When someone asked the Prophet (SAS): “Who is the biggest scholar?” He replied: “He who is constantly trying to learn from others, for a scholar is ever hungry for more knowledge.”
Hadith also proves that worshiping Allah without knowledge is not good practice. The Quran must be recited with the translation in order to understand the meanings of verses.
Knowledge is Power and Blessing
Acquiring knowledge also help us to understand what is right from wrong. Therefore good knowledge can be a path towards Allah’s heaven if we use it sensibly for the good of others. The knowledge is a companion in the dark and a guide in the wilderness. It is better than an ornament because its light shines the whole world. You can even overcome your enemies with knowledge.
The Muslim scientists did many noticeable things in the field of science and medicine. Their enthusiasm and hunger for knowledge was extreme that helped form a spectacular society. The Muslim scientists were innovators with their original research.
For example in learning in Islam. Islamic medicine is one of the most famous and best known facets of Islamic civilization in which muslim scientists excelled tremendously. Al-Azhar university was formed in 800 AD which was the first university in the world. Many intellectuals came out of that university. With the best knowledge and skills, one can become successful in their own profession and help to transform the society as well. The process of learning brings eternal pleasure and enlightens the soul. It opens up your mind to eliminate plagues like poverty, cruelty, injustice and slavery. Most Muslim mathematicians and scientists were from the poor families but with their desire and interest, they laid the foundation for the modern principles on which the modern scientists conduct their research ahead.
