The world of jinn or spirits is supernatural and unseen which has attracted mankind for ages. The concept of jinn is amazing and scary at the same time, theu world of jinns is called the spirit world. So many people think that spirits are souls of dead people, some think they are fairy tales and fantasy which has no connection with reality. What does Islam says? Islam explains to us about the world of the Jinn in Quran and Hadith.
Existence of Jinn
Islamic teachings says that Jinn are creatures of Allah that are created to have a free will like humans. Jinn is an Arabic word, which means hide or conceal. They are invisible from the naked eye of humans, but denying their existance is only a fool’s perception Allah says:
“Indeed We created man from dried clay of black smooth mud. And We created the Jinn before that from the smokeless flame of fire” (Surah Al-Hijr 15:26-27)
Jinn were created by Allah long before the creation of man. Prophet (saws) has confirmed the above verse when he said: “The Angels were created from light and the Jinn from smokeless fire” [1].This description tells us that they were created from fire, their nature has generally been fiery. Allah says:
“I did not create the Jinn and mankind except to worship Me” (Surah Ad-Dhariyat 51:56)
Jinns can choose to be Muslims or non-Muslims. Majority of them are non-muslim due to thir fiery nature and scary structures. They are all called the evil jinns who are a part of the army of most famous Jinn, Iblis- the Shaytan[2].
“Say (O’ Muhammed): It has been revealed to me that a group of Jinn listened and said; ‘Indeed we have heard a marvellous Qur’an. It guides unto righteousness so we have believed in it, and we will never make partners with our lord'” (Surah Al-Jinn 72:1-2)
Similarity with Humans
Human beings are disobedient, selfish and jealous of each other, these evil qualities are also found in jinns. They also drink and eat like humans, they also die and have children. Their life span is far longer than human beings, they will also be sent to heaven or hell on the day of judgement.
Abilities of Jinn
Jinns are superior to humans in powers and abilities. These powers are their test like humans, who are also given powers as a test in this life. They are accountable for their actions, they can take various physical forms like dogs and snakes.
Where They Live?
They have the power to possess the bodies and minds of other creatures makes them very dangerous and dominant. They have possessed many humans in the history. When human beings act strange or abnormal, this is the evil plan of Jinn to lead them astray with their malicious plan. Jinns reside, e.g. graveyards, ruins, deserts, market places etc. They also live in abandoned houses and homes where Quran is not recited and music is played frequently.
Prophet (saws) said: “Indeed, the shaytan flees from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah (the 2nd chapter of the Qur’an) is recited” [4].
Cure From Jinn Possession
The Jinn’s possession is very dangerous phenomenon, If a person does become possessed, then the name of Allah has to be used in expelling the Jinn. Prophet Muhammad taught his companions many duas (prayers) to safeguard them against the influence of evil Jinns. They can also possess the animals, trees and other objects. They make human beings worship the devil instead of Allah by giving them super powers.
Jinns are the prime entities involved in destructive and sinful practices like voodoo, Black magic, Poltergeists, Witchcraft and other things that can destroy human’s life. The magicians have to sell their soul to them and their master Iblis. Making the Statue of Liberty disappear by magician David Copperfield could only be done with the assistance of powerful Jinn. Jinns also do fortune telling and predict the future, which is a heavy sin forbidden by Islam. After the arrival of Islam the heavens were guarded by the angels who throw fire on Jinns who listen to the talks of angels over the skies.
“And We have guarded it (the heavens) from every accursed devil, except one who is able to snatch a hearing and he is pursued by a brightly burning flame” (Surah Al-Hijr 15:18)
Jinn can make a magician and a fortune teller rich and famous. They have also made many super stars and artists rich.
Prophet (saws) said: “The prayer of one who approaches a fortune-teller and asks him about anything, will not be accepted for forty days or nights” [13] and: “Whosoever approaches a fortune-teller and believes in what he says, has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammed” [14]
The jinns are sinister and ingtriguing.
“Indeed he (Iblis) and his tribe watch you from a position where you cannot see them” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:27)
Without the will of Allah, a Jinn can never harm us, they will flee. Some people died during watching the movie Exorcist in the 70s, which was an incredible story of possession of Jinn. They can be misleading and create confusion in the minds of human beings to worship idols and get involved in adultry. Only the word of God and verses of Quran can save us from these wicked creatures who are in large numbers all around us.
