The present arrangement of the Quran is not the work of the later generation, but was made by the Holy Prophet (SAW) under God’s direction. Whenever the chapter was revealed, the Holy prophet summoned his scribes and the followers of the Holy prophet (SAW) memorized it by heart. One of the greatest services rendered to Islam by Abu Bakr (RAD.A) was the collection of the Holy Quran. There were hundreds of Huffaz among the companion during his lifetime of the Holy Prophet but it had not been compiled in book form through its memorization continued even after the death of the Holy prophet (SAW). In various battles which took place against rebels and false Prophets, a number of Huffaz companion were martyred. In the battle against Musaylimah al-Kazzab about seventy Huffaz had died.
In then occurred to Hazrat Umar (RAD.A) that necessary steps should take to preserve the Holy Quran intact in its original form against every kind of danger and it was not wise to depend exclusively upon those who had learned it by heart. Therefore he urged Hazrat Abu Bakr (RAD.A) to put it in Black and White form of a book. Another companion also agreed with Hazrat Umar (RAD.A) opinion but Hazrat Abu Bakr (RAD.A) hesitated in the beginning because it was not done by the Holy prophet. However after some discussion he agreed to it and appointed Hazrat Zaid Bin Thabit (RAD.A) for this work who was hesitant at first but later, he changed his mind and started the work. Hazrat Zaid Bin Thabit (RAD.A) was personal scribe of the holy Prophet (SAW) and he was the best-qualified person for this work because he had acted as an amanuensis to the holy Prophet, and was one of the companions who had learned what the Holy prophet recited, the whole he had learned the Holy Quran directly from Him. Moreover, he was also present on the occasion when the Holy prophet (SAW) recited the complete holy Quran by ALLAH through angel Gabriel. Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit adopted the same order of the various chapter of the holy book as was revealed to the Holy prophet. In the compilation of the holy book a number of prominent companions assisted him. The compiled copy of the Quran was kept in the house of Umm Mu’minin Hazrat Hafsah (RAD.A) who was one of the wives of the holy prophet (SAW) and daughter of Hazrat Umar (RAD.A). It was proclaimed that anyone, who desire, might make a copy of it or compare with it the copy one already possessed.
The collection of the Holy Quran in a book form was not an act against the Sunnah (ways) of the Holy Prophet because the Holy Quran declares itself “A Book” at a number of places e.g., in the very beginning it says, “This is the Book”(2:2). During the Caliphate, Hazrat Usman (R.A) sent copies of the same compilation of the holy Quran, collected during his caliphate. In this way, we see that Hazrat Abu Bakr (RAD.A) kept doing the great work of his Holy prophet (SAW) with unshakable faith and full courage he had struggled to the utmost. Islam is forever grateful to this greatest hero, the next to prophets, for the great services he rendered to it. Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) Caliphate lasted for only two years, three months and ten days (according to the Islamic calendar).
