It is the strong belief of Muslims that Allah is the only one God of the universe and all his creation will rise up again on the day of judgment for answering about their deeds in their mortal life on earth. They also believe that Prophet Muhammad is the last and true prophet of God and the holy Qur’an is the book of Allah which is the last Book for showing the direction to mankind. However, there are two groups of Muslims who have some disagreement between their beliefs in some areas. These groups are called Sunni and Shia Muslims.
How Did Two Groups Formed?
The Shia sect has old historical origins, after the death of Prophet Muhammad, the founders of this sect wanted Ali ( the son in law of prophet) to have all the power. Over the next few centuries, the religious difference between Shia and Sunni sects grew. Shia community all across the globe believe that Ali was the divinely appointed caliph of Islam. His successors are called Shia imams who are the religious scholars from this community of Muslims.
The followers of Prophet Muhammad appointed Abu Bakr. As the Caliph after his death who was the closest friend of the prophet. This difference in the belief that Prophet actually appointed Ali as caliph was the reason of formation of these two groups between Muslims. However, Ali was the fourth caliph between 656 AD to 661AD. The son of Ali Hussain died in the battle of Karbala,
Major Conceptual Differences Between Shia and Sunnis
According to a research, in most Muslim countries, Sunni people do not consider Shias as true Muslims. Shias also pray 3 times a day whereas Sunnis pray five times a day. The perception of Islam is different in both groups, Shia Muslims do not consider the Hadith as the true source of Islamic teachings from Prophet Muhammad. They consider their Imams as the true source of Islamic knowledge and way of life.
The Shia community also does not accept the five pillars of Islam in a sense that Sunni Muslims do. Faith, Prayer, Fasting, Charity, and Pilgrimage are the five pillars of Islam. According to Shia, the five pillars of Islam are Tawhid (the Oneness of God), Nubuwwah (Prophethood), Resurrection, Divine Justice and Imamah (belief in the political and spiritual supremacy of the Prophet’s successors).
The countries where a huge population of Shia Muslims lives is relations are found in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Bahrain. The also live in Pakistan, India, America and Europe as minorities.
